Point to note before you start optimizing your LinkedIn profile, make sure these simple but very necessary factors are in order:

  1. Your Profile Picture and Background Picture

Use a high-quality smiling face picture, professional headshot, preferably 300×300 px as the case may be. It is recommended you make this picture visible to everyone.

You can set up your visibility in your profile – clicking “Edit public profile and URL” from the upper header-right corner.

In the right-side column, you see a rundown of your current visibility options. You can choose who to see your profile photo; your network, your contacts, all LinkedIn Members or “Public”.

I advise that you should set your profile picture public because when your profile picture visibility is public, you make yourself easier to be found (and trusted!) by your potential prospect – those who look for you via search engines.

  1. Your Headline Summary

Describe what you do in your headline, not more than 120 characters or less. Be original and creative but clear and informative.

Include the most relevant keywords in your headline, as it makes it easier for the client to find you when looking for professionals in your field of specialization in LinkedIn.

take caution here! You must not list all of your previous jobs if they are not all relevant to your current position or nature of your job. Instead, focus on the workplaces and experiences that benefit you the most, and list your greatest achievements and areas of focus.

Update your current position regularly maybe every once and then as well! You may decide to refresh job experience for a specific position only after you have left your position or moved on to a new job or acquired a new skill.

  1. Your Skills

Add relevant skills, and ask your friends and colleagues to endorse you.

You don’t need to list all your skills when it comes to LinkedIn Skills. It is advisable that you list fever relevant skills and gain endorsements than to list a wide array of different types of skills but have no one endorse them.

Make sure you update this section a few times a year as well – whenever you learn a new skill or feel like a skill you have listed is no longer relevant to your career interests, make changes accordingly.

Your Linkedin summary section depends on the goal of your profile, the summary section should include 3-5 sentences that describe: your area of expertise, your years of experience in your industry, the types of organizations you’ve worked with, your skills, and what you’re most known for professionally.
